about

An introspective dive into the mind of my younger self. The story focuses on my life during high school, experiences in my community, emotional challenges, and transitioning from football to music. As much as the theme is about my life, it's equally dedicated to the lives of young black men in society today. This song is a call to them. As young black men from underprivileged communities, we all face the same struggles, emotionally and spiritually. However, that struggle can sometimes feel like a lonely place, and during my teenage years (some of the most defining years of our lives), I wish I had more support. I wish I never felt so alone. I use this song to channel the compassion my younger self needed, whilst directing that love to young black men, collectively.

lyrics

Lyrics:

I was the same yout as you
Please know that you’re not alone, the way you feel I felt it too
We come from different zones, different homes, yeah that’s true
Your pain is trapped inside, I was the same yout as you
I grew on the block, idolised man who shot
Like you
Stole from the shop when I had no money to cop like you
Plans of being a pro baller just me and my bro like you
We walk in different shoes, but I’m the same yout as you
But I’m the same yout as you

He went to school in clarks or kickers
Neat fade and the brightest smile
Small gap between his teeth, a joyful step when walking round
Year 7 his aim was fun, J knew from right or wrong
Morals he learnt from a single mum, but he tried to be the class clown
Year 8 was footy and girls, J started watching porn
Learning things that he never knew, he was sure and wanted to try
He got signed for a football club, and in school he’s known as the guy
In class he’s being delinquent, saying the teachers wrong and he’s right
But sutten ain’t right, moving stubborn now like his dad
Few parent meetings now he’s getting aggressive and going on bad
Now it’s year 9, he can’t afford to be wasting time
J distanced from all the friends, holding him back got himself in line

I was the same yout as you
Please know that you’re not alone, the way you feel I felt it too
We come from different zones, different homes, yeah that’s true
Your pain is trapped inside, I was the same yout as you

New year and he’s in year 10
J’s always known it’s starting to show how he ain’t the same as them
He focused hard in class, moved up sets, made new friends
He’s still got rage inside, don’t speak what’s deep on his mind
This when he met Yefe and dem
J never had no clue they’d all become lifelong friends
From young they knew of each other, they all grew up in the ends
Year 11 now it’s that time
Just getting his grades and leaving school
Was on the forefront of his mind
Time’s come to get his results
A* to C, he opened the paper J was gassed!
Thank God, all the revision it came in handy and helped him pass
J knew what it came down to, the fact he knew how to Graft!
Soon he realised, that word-he’d become that!

During football then came music, recording tunes wid the guys
Phantom Boyz, hardest group then
The youngers knew every line
Girls and geeza’s from Seacroft and Gipton
playing our songs
If we try cut through town, then Briggate was singing along
The whole team were local celebs, LS7 stars in the hood
Name’s on everyone’s lips, like teenagers smoking bud
Knew I was gonna be great, from music couldn’t believe
Looking back it all was fate, cause life was planting a seed
I was 16 at this time, was playing for Leeds
Football dreams, life had plans of its own
Music was mans outlet, for times I was feeling alone
Releasing rage on the page, helped me to gain control
17 years of age, then I released, Man Like Graft
My second music video had Yorkshire moving daft!
18, 19, 20 and everyone still was gassed!
That song will live on forever, Leeds history and that’s fact!
I’m building a legacy now, GCO, from the ground
In all of the things I’ve done, biggest reward is see mum proud
Came to my first live show, to this day she’s still in the crowd
Humbly shell the festival stage, won’t catch me rolling loud
21, my whole life changed
22, I dealt with internal battled I faced
Despite all the mental setbacks, I always kept up the pace
Busy I answered my calling, hence why my line was engaged
If I don’t work on myself, then how can I channel the rage?
On the other side of that pain, there’s no sunshine without rain
There’s a kid in his room just waiting to bloom, hurting that was me
There’s a kid in his room believed that he’ll be a star, that was me
I was the same yout as you, and you’re the same yout as me
